SF Vegan Bakesale – Mission: “Cupid”!

Valentine’s day. A celebration of love, commitment and giving… right? Actually, it’s corporate America at it’s finest demanding your hard earned money and making you feel guilty if you don’t cough it up.

We spend a ton of money on crap that gets thrown away a week later, gorge ourselves on processed chocolate EVERYTHING and in the end, we have nothing to show for it except a fatter ass and a skinnier wallet. Ok, maybe you scored a 45 minute romp session with your sweetie if you were lucky. Props to you.

This year, we’re saying screw corporate America and hitting our local streets to gather a basket full of homemade vegan goodies to share with our loved ones.
YOU SHOULD TOO!!!

Come check out our Valentine line of cinnamon rolls!
All proceeds will go to Cycles of Change and Harvest Home Sanctuary. Isn’t that way more awesome than giving your money to all those greedy corporations?!

Thanks to Megan of Say It’s Not Soy for the amazing design and for Vegansaurus for sharing this uber cute flyer!

See you there!

Bad Ass Homemade Dog Treats!

We’ve had our new pup for a week now and yes, I’m still being super obnoxious about him. I want to take him everywhere, talk in a really high-pitched, squeaky voice, kiss him all over his head, dress him up in cute little sweaters… Yes… I’m THAT lady.

And of course, being a bake-a-holic, I wanted to bake him his very own badass treats. So… I did!

Awesome, right?!

Want to make your own? Check out the recipe here! *We substituted regular milk for soy milk.*

Bakesale for Haiti @ Mercury Cafe!

A few weeks ago, a ginormous earthquake rocked Haiti and left a pile of devastation behind. Thousands died and lost their homes and some people still have yet to be found beneath the rubble.

Vegan bakers around the world decided to unite and form bakesale’s to raise funds for support.

Last Saturday, the ladies from Sugar Beat Sweets took charge and organized the Bay Area’s emergency vegan bakesale to raise funds for Partners in Health & Food for Life Global. Props to them for organizing everything at the last minute! Of course, we were there with Rocky Road and Daiya Pizza rolls in hand.

The bakesale was originally to be held at Patricia’s Green but due to the rain, it was moved to the Mercury Cafe on the corner of Octavia and Page. An uber cute coffee shop. If you haven’t already stopped in, I recommend doing so ASAP.

When we arrived, the first thing we saw was a car engulfed in flames. Seriously. If that doesn’t draw a crowd, I’m not sure what does. WTF?

Once the chaos had subsided, we squeezed into the cafe with our treats and Toby, our new pooch. We handed off our rolls and bought a couple potato and spinach knishes from the table. What the hell is a knish you say? I had no freakin’ clue until I looked it up. It was pretty good though.

While we were there, we ran into a few of the super rad ladies from VegNews magazine and finally met Mellisser -aka “The Urban Housewife“. We caught our friend Laura on the way out and made her show us the goods she was taking home. We were stoked to see two of our rolls in there. Thanks Laura!

Everything seemed to be running pretty smoothly despite the rain, so we decided to head out to grab some grub. Laura recommended a little deli on Haight Street called Love N’ Haight Deli. So, that’s where we went. Flori got the pepper ‘steak’ sandwich, and I mistakenly ordered the falafel wrap. It wasn’t that it wasn’t tasty, I just happened to have the most amazing falafel wrap ever in Berlin and sadly since then, no other falafel can even compare. “Falafel”… am I the only one who feels dumb saying that word out loud?

After our meal, we wandered Haight St. for a while then hiked back to the car. I had forgotten about the box of homemade dog treats we made for all our little vegan pup friends! We handed them over, said our goodbye’s, tried not to buy everything on the table, and started our journey home.

When we got home, I checked our Twitter account and saw the Sugar Beat Sweets update on the total that was raised. $3,375!!!! Stellar job ladies!

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support and who helped raised funds by either purchasing baked goods or by donating cash. Thanks to the SBS ladies for organizing and the owner of Mercury Cafe for letting them set up shop. A little bit of baking and camaraderie, clearly goes a long way.

The next bakesale we’ll be participating in will be held on Saturday February 13th, in front of Ike’s Place (3506 16th Street) from 11am-4pm. The proceeds from the sale will go to Harvest Home Sanctuary – an amazing farm animal sanctuary in Stockton that’s home to over 100 rescued animals and Cycles of Change - a great non-profit that provides bicycles and bike education to disadvantaged adults and youth.

Do it!

Our buns + Agnostic Front & Anti-Flag = A Good Time

This past week has been a busy one! Lucky for me, my husband has a pretty diverse and talented group of friends that keep me constantly entertained who just happened to be playing shows around town. Of course, I wanted to feed them.

Last Friday, we were invited to a show at one of my favorite dive bars in SF. Thee Parkside. When we got there, the place was beyond packed. And for good reason. New York legendary Hardcore/Thrash titans, Agnostic Front, were in town for their 25th anniversary tour.

Uh, awesome much? I was stoked that my husband was able to catch up with his friends and most of all, thankful to have VIP access to the bathroom. THANK YOU GOD.

After chatting a while with the guys in the band and randomly running into the gorgeous Elizabeth Castoria, managing editor at VegNews magazine, I made a ferocious attempt to fight off a room full of 250 pound sweaty men to get a drink at the bar. A half hour later when I wandered back with the drinks, my friends response was “What the hell is that? I’ve had bigger drinks on an airplane.” I decided freezing my ass off outside for the remainder of the night was a better option than strapping on brass knuckles for another drink.

After the show, we said our goodbye’s and exchanged contact information. Let me just say, NYC… I’m about to be all over you. I can’t wait to take on the east coast vegan food scene with those guys!

Last night, we stopped by another one of my favorite city venues – Slim’s – to say “what up” to our friends in Anti-Flag. Call me soft, but I was freeeeeezing when we got there! Thankfully the guys had a heated bus and their tour manager was nice enough to make us some coffee. OMG,IFREAKINLOVEYOU.

We met a few of their friends, laughed over #2′s hilarious story involving Gene Simmons and polished turd and best of all, watched Pat devour one of our Rocky Road cinnamon rolls and say “Oh my God”. When the word “God” and our baked goods are in the same sentence, I’m happy. Thanks Pat!

Unfortunately, we had to take off earlier than we would have liked due to the fact our new little one was at home with our cats who wanted to kill him. It was nice to meet everyone for the first time, to see my husband so happy and listen to him reminisce with his friends over his band days though. I’d say we had a pretty great week.

If you haven’t heard of these bands, I feel sorry for you.

No, seriously though, I strongly suggest you check them out next time they are in your area. Not only are they amazing musicians but they are all super stand-up dudes.  Plus, they dig our buns… so that makes them extra awesome.

Nature’s Express Grand Opening & The Plant Cafe!

Our friend Karine was organizing the Nature’s Express grand opening event in Berkeley on Saturday so we decided to go check it out. Fashionably late, as usual, we were surprised to see a huge line still going strong when we arrived.

Nature’s Express is basically fresh, fast, vegan food to-go. Sandwiches, salads, wraps, smoothies, etc. They had a limited menu due to the fact it was their grand opening and a good portion of the stuff was already sold out by the time we hopped in line. I managed to grab a thai peanut wrap sorta deal out of the refrigerator and Flori placed an order for 2 mushroom burgers and a lemonade.

The verdict? It was OK. The wrap was a spinach tortilla with some cheap greens and tofu in it. The burger looked like a frozen pressed patty slapped in between a bun with some fresh veggies. Despite the quality, the portions were good size though. On one hand, I feel like it’s nothing I couldn’t have made at home but on the other, we’re pretty stoked that another all vegan restaurant has hit the streets of Berkeley.
I think the highlight of the event was congratulating Karine on the amazing turnout and chatting with other vegans such as Chef Jessie Miner and meeting the adorable little old lady who owns Millennium. Oh, and the fact we won a goodie bag with a $10 gift certificate in the raffle was pretty awesome too.
I can’t say that I was totally impressed but given the fact that it was opening day and we pretty much got the last of the food, I’m willing to give it another shot.
Sunday, we decided to venture out to The Plant Cafe in SF. I had heard some good things and we were really excited to try it. We chose to go to the Marina location for breakfast since we were already in the area. Just to clarify, The Plant Cafe is NOT an all vegan restaurant.
We got there around 11:30 and they were only serving items off the breakfast menu which kinda bummed me out. I guess I expected it to be a typical sit-down restaurant with a server who takes your order. Instead, we ordered at the counter, gathered our silverware, table tag, condiments and our coffee cup and  picked a seat. We helped ourselves to the coffee in the warmers by the front door and our food was delivered shortly after. I went with the basil, pesto tofu scramble. *Yawn*. I could make a better tofu scramble with my eyes shut. It wasn’t bad, it was just… blah. The perks of the place? The vegan options were actually labeled “vegan” which was nice and the majority of the take-out boxes were vegan friendly. Nothing else struck me as even coming close to awesome. We finished our food and bid the place adieu.

Feeling like I may have been too hard on the Marina location, we decided to give the Embarcadero location a try for dinner later that night. I was super impressed with the layout of the restaurant and the fact they had heated outdoor seating along the waterfront. We grabbed a spot outside and ordered the pumpkin seed & cornmeal encrusted tempeh.
Maybe 5 minutes after sitting down, this adorable little toddler wanders over to our table and projectile vomits all over the seat next to me. One more step and I would have been covered in toddler puke. Not once, but TWICE. A couple minutes later our server delivers our food – while stepping in it. Trying not to gag, I politely asked our server if he could please grab a mop or something – anything. Finally, the mess was taken care of.  The smell? Not so much. I’m not sure if it was the puking incident that ruined the taste of the food or if it just plain sucked. Either way, it seemed really bland and the portions were much smaller than we expected for a meal that was $14 a pop. Not to mention, the service was sub par – especially considering the circumstances.
Needless to say, we were more than happy to get the F outta there. Considering both experiences were pretty gross, I can’t say I recommend this place nor will I be going back anytime soon.
Despite the whole disgusting vegan food experience, the weekend turned out to be pretty rad. We had an awesome 5-6 mile run in the rain with the PETA Pack, stayed in a fantastic hotel, and made a pretty big and VERY exciting decision that should be final today at 1pm.

Help for Haiti

Ok, all seriousness and no swearing for this post.

“Tuesday afternoon, January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years – 7.0 in magnitude – struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The initial quake was later followed by twelve aftershocks greater than magnitude 5.0. Structures of all kinds were damaged or collapsed, from shantytown homes to national landmarks. It is still very early in the recovery effort, but millions are likely displaced, and thousands are feared dead as rescue teams from all over the world are now descending on Haiti to help where they are able.” – Boston.com

These are just a few photos I found while browsing online. There were more that included pretty graphic details and descriptions which I didn’t think were appropriate to post.

What’s taking place in Haiti right now is beyond my worst nightmare. I can’t even imagine what the people of Haiti are going through. There ARE ways that we can help though. Even if it’s just a little bit.

1. You can text the word “YELE” to 501501. Yele Haiti (founded by Wyclef Jean of the Fugees) will charge $5 to your phone bill to help those suffering in Haiti. Trust me, you won’t miss the $5.

2. The SF Vegan Bakesale is putting together an emergency vegan bakesale for earthquake relief in Haiti from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, January 23rd, in Patricia’s Green in Hayes Valley. If you or anyone you know is interested, please email Jen

3. More ways to help: http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/haiti-disaster-relief-how-to-contribute/

On a final note, go home, hug your family and be SO THANKFUL for what you have today.

Chocolate Covered Twinkies!

Aka “the devil” or “a heart attack waiting to happen”. They’re so, so bad…. but OH-SO-GOOD!

I managed to gank my mom’s Twinkie pan a few weeks ago and I’ve been putting it to great use! And yes, I brought it back high school style and said “gank”.

There were 3 reasons I was stoked to make this recipe:

1. My German husband had no idea what a Twinkie was which I found just sad.
2. I was pretty excited about using barley malt powder since I had no clue what it was.
3. It’s a dessert with creamy filling covered in chocolate.   Nouf said.

The result?

I thought the recipe I used was just OK. I dunno, maybe my palate was just being stuck up or something. I used a basic vegan vanilla cupcake recipe from one of my cookbooks, and the filling recipe I found online. While I wasn’t totally impressed, my husband scarfed down 2 of them last night before we went out to East Bay Vegan Drinks and another this morning. He’s currently recovering from a massive sugar hangover as I type.

Regardless of the impression the taste left on me, they were still fun to make. If you’d like to give it a go yourself, feel free to Google away or use the one I found here.

P.S. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the sugar hangover.

1st ever East Bay Vegan Bakesale – part deuce!

First of all, major props to the ladies at Fat Bottom Bakery for organizing the 1st ever East Bay Vegan Bakesale in front of Issues in Oakland last Saturday. With the help of some amazing bakers and some very hungry patrons, they raked in an astounding total of $2192! The beneficiaries? Laurel Elementary School (the students even pitched in and made the uber cute sign) and Bad Rap Pit Bull Rescue. Cutest pups EVER.

The treats were up for grabs starting at 11 am. That’s when we intended to be there. The reality was that our lagging asses rolled up around 1pm instead. This time, our 4 surprise flavors included Rocky Road, Lemon, Mocha Almond & a Savory Pizza roll with Daiya vegan cheese. To our surprise, there was a line of people waiting for us to arrive! Holy ego boost Batman! Within 30 minutes we were completely sold out. Not bad, right? I even heard some guy say “Oh my God dude, this is the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth” as he munched on one of our Rocky Road rolls. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! Thanks guy!

After about 20 minutes of people watching, we decided to grab a to-go box. A lot of the stuff was already sold out but we did manage to get our hands on a piece of lemon pie from Local Love, a key lime cayenne cookie from The Inspired Cookie, a piece of cherry/apple pie and a chunk of chocolate cake from Pure Joy Bakery and of course, a super rich peanut butter cup which I refused to share. If I had a choice, we would have purchased a few more things but we decided that during our marathon training, we should set a $20 limit and eat responsibly.
Which my husband did.
Me? I ate everything over the weekend and tried not to fight my husband for this last piece of cake. Lucky for him, I decided to be nice.

We were stoked to see some familiar faces, meet some new people & of course, try out new baked goods. My favorite part of the day? Watching non-vegan people walk by, try something and say “WOW”.

So awesome!

Until next time….happy baking and happy eating! See you at the next one!

Baked Vegan Corn Dogs!!!!

If I haven’t clearly stated my passion for vegan corn dogs already, let me reiterate. I FREAKIN’ LOVE VEGAN CORN DOGS. Well, not as much as my drunk friend -who will remain nameless- that once shoved one down her throat for $5 at a party and said with her mouth full, “See? I can take more!”. Haha. God I love my friends. You know who you are.

Moving on…. I was sitting around the house this weekend trying to decide if I should attempt vegan Twinkies when I had an epiphany. I could  use the Twinkie pan for vegan corn dogs! I skipped over to my laptop beaming with pride inside and Googled my idea. Sadly, someone (and by someone, I mean several people) already had the same idea. Ok, I’ll admit, it wasn’t my brightest moment but I was a little butthurt when I realized I didn’t come up with it. Regardless, I proceeded to make my meatless tasty treats.

I followed the cornbread recipe on the back of the box (cause I’m hella lazy like that) and threw a veggie dog in the middle of it. Classy, right? 20 minutes later…perfection! The best part? It wasn’t fried! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE me a deep fried corn dog as much as the next dude but my stomach… not so much. I was stoked to actually have a lighter, baked version that didn’t make me want to hurl after I ate it.

The Twinkie pan made 8 corn dogs. Despite my weird fetish for corn dogs, I wasn’t up for the challenge of consuming all 8 so, I decided to freeze them. They freeze really well. Just pop em’ in a microwave for a minute or so and they’re just like new!

If you have a Twinkie pan, I definitely recommend trying this. If you don’t have a Twinkie pan, GO BUY ONE NOW!
