Our Holiday Cinnamon Rolls!!!

Last weekend, PETA held it’s annual holiday party at the Oakland office. We figured this was a great opportunity to release our holiday line of cinnamon rolls.

Now normally, I dread going to holiday parties. I usually find myself stuck in the middle of a bunch of people I have nothing in common with, smiling and nodding pretending to be interested in what the other person is saying while I scan the room and secretly try to devise a clever exit strategy. Thankfully, this wasn’t like that at all.

As soon as we got there, we grabbed a couple glasses of champagne, said some hello’s and gradually made our way to the food room to check out the spread. Table Nectar catering company provided all the goods. We grabbed a plate and filled it with sample bites of coconut polenta, butternut squash soup and raw vegan sushi. OMFG. I totally give them major points for the food, presentation and the fact that they cut and served our cinnamon rolls for us. (Thanks guys!) I was a little bummed to find out that the company wasn’t all vegan though. Booo. Still, amazing food though.

After the presentations and the rad video that recapped PETA’s 2009 achievements, our holiday line of cinnamon rolls were finally unveiled!!! We listened to the murmur of “Oohhh’s” and “Ahhh’s” around us and watched as people flocked to the table and packed their plates with our ooey, gooey Candy Cane, Gingerbread and Holiday Nog rolls. Our signature dough, drenched in our sweet cream ‘cheeze’ frosting, topped with crushed candy cane, gingerbread cookies and Silk soy nog with spicy nutmeg.

How’s that for festive!?

Stoked that our treats went over so well, we decided to mingle a while longer before packing it up and heading home. Before we even pulled into the driveway we were receiving email alerts for more holiday orders! Sweet!

This year has been beyond incredible for us. It’s been a challenge juggling our personal lives as well as going through the start up process to open our storefront. In the process of it all, we’ve met so many awesome people and are so thankful for each and every one of you who have supported us and continue to support us by spreading the word and buying our products. We are especially thankful for the opportunity to do business with organizations like PETA, Vegan Outreach & Farm Sanctuary that do such amazing things for animals all around the world. Thank you all for being a voice for those who have none.

With our holiday cinnamon roll line finally released, it’s now time to sit back and relax with our loved ones…. and, of course, that one weird family member everyone seems to have.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Alkemie Ice Cream vs. The Other Guys

A few months ago my husband and I attended SF vegan drinks. There was this guy there that had just come out with a new “raw” vegan ice cream called “Alkemie“. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to chat that night but a friend of mine filled me in on all the yummy details including the awesome way he was discovered. I decided that I had to see what all the hype was about so, I emailed him.

After choppin’ it up a bit, being the nice guy that he is, he graciously offered to buy us 2 pints and challenged us to compare his brand to Veg News’ ’2009 Veggie Award Winner‘. HELLS TO THE Y-E-S. Despite the fact it was 50 degrees outside and raining, our happy asses skipped into Whole Foods like it was the middle of summer. 2 pints of Mint Chocolate Chip and we were two very happy campers!

Right off the bat I noticed the ingredient difference between Alkemie and the leading brand. While Alkemie had just a handful of ingredients, the other brand had an uber huge, long list. The second thing I looked at was the nutrition content. Although they were both pretty close in comparison, I noticed that the fat and saturated fat was way higher in the Alkemie brand. According to Alkemie’s website the fat that is in the ice cream is ‘healthy fat’ though. My ass sure hopes so.

As I continued to browse the site, I discovered that they use no refined sugars of any kind (besides the trace amount of organic evaporated cane sugar in the chocolate chunks) which means it’s safer for people with Type II diabetes. Grandpa will be stoked! It was also gluten-free, rice free and mostly soy free. They claim to use organic ingredients from certified organic suppliers and their products are 95% raw which we LOVE!

So, there’s all this good stuff that’s sold me so far. How does it taste though?

We packed up our pints and headed over to my friends house to have an ice cream party with her and her two adorable little girls. It was time for the taste test! First, the 5 of us tried the leading brand. YUUUUUM! Next, was Alkemie. Another YUUUUUM! The difference? While we preferred the leading brands chocolate, we liked the texture of Alkemie better. It was smooth, thick and creamy as opposed the the thinner, more icy/watery texture of the leading brand. The mint in Alkemie was subtle where as in the leading brand, it was more pronounced and had more of a strong, artificial flavor. We did notice that the Alkemie brand had a slight aftertaste. Cashews maybe? We’re not really sure.

The result? 2 of us liked the Alkemie better, and 2 of us preferred the leading brand. 1 was er… undecided? She’s 1 and pointed at both so… The verdict? Both were awesome for different reasons.

Either way, we’re stoked to have a new vegan ice cream on the market made from mostly organic and raw ingredients. It’s nice to pick up a product, read the label and understand the ingredients in it instead of seeing a laundry list of those we can’t even pronounce. A big thank you to the guys at Alkemie for the complimentary pints. Deeeeeelish!

Crazy Good Vegan Carrot Cake!

For the past year my husband’s best friend (who we like to refer to as German #2) has been asking me to make him carrot cake. For the past year, I’ve been saying “I will, I will”.

Being the cake hater that I am, I put it off as long as I possibly could. After a year of nagging, I finally gave in. Enough already.

I skimmed through a couple books on my book shelf and grabbed The 100 Best Vegan Baking Recipes: Amazing Cookies, Cakes, Muffins, Pies, Brownies and Breadsby Kris Holechek.

I have to admit, I was skeptical. Not being a huge cake fan let alone carrot cake, I had my doubts.

Holy hell was I wrong. This cake came out tasting AMAZING!

I highly recommend buying the book just for this recipe alone. There were a few other things in there that caught my attention as well though. Vegan croissants anyone?

Go buy the book. Bake it, eat it and thank me later.

East Bay Vegan Bakesale!

Oh hell yes.

SF Vegan Bakesale & Our Wedding Chaos

While you were here…

We were here!

With the help of our amazing best friends who agreed to deliver our treats, we were able to participate in December’s SF Vegan Bakesale and get hitched at the same time! Literally.

After months of experimenting and watching our asses get fatter, we finally decided to let the cat out of the bag. We agreed that our wedding day was the perfect day to unveil 4 of our 30 brand new, top secret, signature flavors!

Selling at $5 a pop (thanks SF Vegan Bakesale!) our Rocky Road, Blueberry, Chocolate Peanut Butter & Pumpkin Cream Cheeze cinnamon rolls were a HUGE hit! Our team reported all 4 dozen gone within 10-15 minutes! WTF?! Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy.

Thanks to everyone who shelled out the funds. Not only did it make us feel extra awesome but it also helped raise a whopping $4,200 for SaveABunny & the Food Empowerment Project. You guys kick so much ass!

Word has it that the lovely ladies from Fat Bottom Bakery are starting an East Bay Vegan Bakesale in January! HELLS TO THE YES. We’re all over that. East Bay Pride, whaaaaat?! We’re super stoked and you should be too. More details on all that noise later though.

Overall it was an amazing day. Bunnies were saved, amazing vegan food was consumed and I locked down one incredibly sexy German. ;)

So hey, if you had a chance to grab a cinnamon roll from our new line at the bakesale, shoot us your thoughts!

The storefront and 26 more flavors are coming soon! Whoo Hoo!

Stuffed Pineapple Cookies!

Every holiday my family makes a giant batch of pineapple filled cookies. It’s been a tradition in our family for as long as I can remember.

The thing is, these particular cookies are a bitch to make on your own. Sure, it can be done but it’s a tedious job and takes up a good portion of your day. That’s why we used to divide the recipe up between the 3 of us. My grandmother would make the dough, my mom would make the filling, then it would be handed off to me to cut, stuff and bake them. The next day we would practically stampede each other to get to the platter. Needless to say, they would disappear within a matter of hours.

Since my grandma passed a few years ago two things have happened.

1. I went vegan.
2. No one wanted to attempt the cookies on their own.

Then, a miracle happened.

The other night, my doorbell rang. I opened the door and saw my cousin standing there with a small, white Tupperware box. When I opened it, rays of bright light beamed from inside and angels began to sing. I looked at her with excitement. Could it be true? A vegan version of our family’s recipe? By God, it was!

My cousin, my hero!

Ok, so the light and the angels thing didn’t happen but holy hell were these cookies perfect! They tasted just like the original recipe minus the death. I’m so stoked to have snagged the recipe in time for Christmas!

Email me for the recipe!
